Filling up diesel in the petrol car – a costly mistake?

Filling up diesel in the petrol car a costly

It was during Tuesday that a petrol station in Bengtsfors happened to fill the cistern of a petrol pump with diesel.

The error was discovered today, Wednesday, after 29 people had time to refuel at the supermarket. It is not known how many of these have used the incorrectly filled pump.

What happens if you fill up diesel in the petrol car?

Normally, it is impossible to accidentally fill up a petrol car with diesel, as the spout of a diesel pump is normally larger than the hole in the car’s filler neck.

If there is diesel in a petrol pump, it is possible to refuel incorrectly, but luckily, diesel usually does not cause any major damage in a petrol car according to the British roadside assistance company AA.

What normally happens is that the diesel tars up the spark plugs and the fuel system. This leads to the car not wanting to start. Once the diesel is removed, however, there is usually no permanent damage to the engine.

If you refuel the diesel car then?

According to the AA, it is worse if you happen to fill up petrol in a diesel car, which is easier to do because the spout of the diesel pump easily fits into the filler neck of a petrol car.

The big problem is that diesel is an oil and therefore lubricates the engine, while petrol dissolves oil and thus impairs lubrication.

This in turn increases the friction between the diesel engine’s components, which thus wear quickly and can be permanently damaged if the engine is started with petrol in the tank.

Do not be careless with AdBlue

Another mistake you can make when refueling is to accidentally fill AdBlue in the wrong tank of your modern diesel car, where the blue liquid helps with exhaust gas purification.

If you happen to pour AdBlue into the diesel tank, it can damage the tank itself, the fuel pump and the fuel injectors, among other things.

If you fill diesel in the AdBlue tank, this risks destroying expensive components in the exhaust gas treatment.

If you discover that you have refueled incorrectly in any way, the AA recommends that you avoid starting the car until the incorrect fuel has been removed from the tank.
