Falling prices for cheese and dairy products depressed food prices in August

Cheese and dairy products became cheaper in August compared to July thanks to extensive price reductions by individual players. According to Ulf Mazur, CEO and founder of the independent site Matpriskollen, it is a reaction to the fact that consumers have changed their buying behavior.

– It is us consumers who have made it happen for them by buying differently now. We change stores, buy more at extra prices and change brands, he says.

– If you lose sales and we consumers choose other brands, you have to do something in the end.

The goods that fell the most

Créme fraiche and sour cream fell the most, with 6 percent. At the same time, the price of hard cheese was reduced by 4.5 percent, while milk and cream became 4.4 percent cheaper. The price of, among other things, filet, yoghurt and shortening also went down.

Ulf Mazur describes the reductions as “enormously large”.

– It is positive that there may be reductions. That if we behave differently and buy less of something, we might end up forcing the producers to lower prices, he says.

Many products become more expensive

However, excluding cheese and dairy products, food prices increased by 0.3 percent. Matpriskollen has investigated the regular prices of almost 43,000 goods, of which 8,236 became more expensive. 5,210 products reduced in price.

– It is fruit and berries that have also decreased by 0.4 percent and then it is basically up on everything, says Ulf Mazur.

Vegetables and pantry products increased the most in price, with 0.7 and 0.6 percent respectively. Ulf Mazar says producers and suppliers are still under pressure from the difficult economic situation, with inflation, war in Ukraine and a weak krone exchange rate.

– There is still upward price pressure, he says.
