The grades for the country’s ninth-graders are falling or stagnant in almost all subjects, according to a compilation that the newspaper Ämnesläraren has made with the help of the Swedish National Agency for Education’s grade statistics.

The biggest drop is in Swedish, where the grade point for several years has been steady at 14 or more – but which has now dropped to 13.8 points.

Apart from English and mother tongue, the percentage of students failing is also increasing – and in several subjects the increase is sharp.

According to Björn Öckert, professor of economics at the Institute for Labor Market and Education Policy Evaluation (IFAU), the explanation is probably that the national exams are back after the pandemic.

– During the two pandemic years, no national tests were held. Then there was nothing for the teachers to relate to when they graded several of the subjects. Now the tests are back and then they have a restraining effect on grading, he tells the newspaper.
