Expect more flaring noise at Sarnia site after outage Imperial

Additional flaring and noise is expected at Imperial’s Sarnia site in coming days after an equipment outage Wednesday.

The unplanned outage affected several process units at the site, the company said in a post to the Bluewater Association for Safety, Environment and Sustainability (BASES) community notification system.

“Equipment safeguards functioned correctly, preventing the event from escalating,” the company said.

Imperial said the Environment Ministry was notified and perimeter air monitoring was taking place.

Imperial’s Sarnia operations include a refinery, chemical plant and research center employing about 1,000 workers, the company’s website says.

“As personnel work to safely return the site to normal operations over the next several days, there will be elevated flaring and increased noise,” the company said.
