Every crash in Mortal Kombat 1 secretly uses up memory on your PC disk

Every time it crashes, Mortal Kombat 1 places a folder with error reports on your PC drive without asking. With a size of up to 1 GB, these can be very large. The lost space continues to increase with each crash.

Errors and bugs in new video games are not uncommon. But there are also errors that are not immediately noticeable because they do not affect the gaming experience as such. The nasty surprise usually hits the players later and completely unexpectedly.

How does Mortal Kombat 1 secretly consume data storage? Mortal Kombat 1 (MK1) has now discovered an issue with automatically generated crash reports consuming memory on your PC drive.

Several players of MK1 on the PC report that every time the game crashes, a folder with a crash report is created. The folder size can vary, but can take up a maximum of 1 GB.

On X, formerly Twitter, user “X-Azeez” shared images of various saved crash reports:

It becomes problematic if MK1 crashes very often for you. In this case, a separate crash report is created each time. Individual users report up to 70 GB of storage space used (via Steam).

Why is that bad? If a system is running with too little free space, the system can become unstable. In individual cases it also refuses to work completely until enough storage space is released again.

As game installations continue to grow, this is a problem that should not be underestimated.

Developers are working on a solution

Is there already a patch for the bug? No, unfortunately not yet. However, Cory Taylor, a community manager from publisher WB Games, has commented on the problem.

Taylor says the problem is known and the MK1 developers from the NetherRealms studio are already working on a solution (via Twitter).

Can you delete the folders yourself? Yes, for the time being there is no other way than to take action yourself and remove the folders with the files they contain. Unless the developer has an official solution to the problem, this is your only option to address the issue.

Delete crash reports yourself

Where can I find the crash report folders? Thanks to the community, two different folder paths have now been identified that may contain these files. You have to delete all subfolders there to free up storage space.

The first path is:

  • C:\Users\[Benutzername]\AppData\Local\MK12\Saved\Steam\Crashes
  • The second path is here and may also contain crash reports:

  • C:\Users\[Benutzername]\AppData\Local\CrashDump
  • It’s best to check both folder paths to really find and delete all files. It remains to be seen when the developers will fix the problem.
