Robin Longstride (Russell Crowe) works as a simple archer alongside Richard the Lionheart. They survived the Crusades, but on the journey home Richard was killed in battle. And what’s more, on the journey home, Robin and his closest comrades stumble into an ambush for Richard’s immediate followers, which was actually intended for Richard himself.

Robin and his men overpower the attackers. To one of them, Sir Robert Loxley, Robin swears to tell his father Walter of his death and to bring him back his sword. Arrived in Loxley, Walter makes him a tempting suggestion. Robin is supposed to pretend to be Robert. Marion (Cate Blanchett), Robert’s widow, could keep her land once Walter is gone.

Robin accepts – and enters a world of the nobles, the rich. And with it also into a world of intrigue, corruption and cruelty. All this while an henchman of the French king (Mark Strong) lurks in the background to take out Robin. And while the dark clouds of war gather in the sky over England.
