A calf of the endangered Sumatran rhinoceros has been born in western Indonesia. The number of animals of the species is estimated to be fewer than 80 on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Borneo, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature and the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Delilah the rhino gave birth to the yet-to-be-named male calf weighing 25 kilos. The father’s name is Harapan.
It is the fifth rhino calf born in the Way Kambas National Park in Sumatra in a breeding program, Indonesia’s Environment and Forestry Minister said in a statement.
The mother rhino Delilah was found next to her calf on Saturday.
The Sumatran rhinoceros species is the smallest of the modern rhinoceroses. It is very rare in Borneo and Sumatra.
