The Thai parliament has decided to postpone the vote on a new prime minister, the speaker announced on Tuesday according to AFP.

Parliament earlier voted against allowing Pita Limjaroenrat – whose party Kao Klai (roughly the Progress Party) won a landslide victory in the May election – to be nominated for the post of the country’s prime minister.

The Kao Klai party then decided to instead support a candidate from the coalition Pheu Thai (roughly For Thais) ahead of the vote on who will lead the country – a vote that was supposed to take place on July 27, but is now postponed.

Pita Limjaroenrat had joined in the election in a coalition together with seven other parties to make a united resistance to the military establishment that has held and regulated power in Thailand since the military coup in 2014.
