The Swedish men’s national team was too bad last year.
Edvin Anger took two podium places at the World Cup last year, which was enough to become the best Swede.
– It is bad, I think, that two podium places should be enough, he says to Dagens Nyheter.
Skiing WC in Planica 2023 resulted in Sweden’s first WC medal on the men’s side since 2017. William Poromaa fought his way to a bronze in the five-mile after a blistering sprint against Calle Halfvarsson at the end. Since then, there have been no Swedish successes.
Anger saws the colleagues
Last year it was Edwin Anger22, who was Sweden’s best skater on the men’s side. But it wasn’t with any impressive numbers that he “won” that award. He only took two podiums last year, but that was more than anyone else did.
– It is bad, I think, that two podium places should be enough to be the one who takes the most podium places on the men’s side. It has been hard, he tells Dagens Nyheter.

He is saddened by the generally low level of the men’s national team in recent years. When not anymore Marcus Hellner, Johan Olsson, Anders Södergren and Emil Jonsson is available, it has been up to Halfvarsson and Poromaa to perform, which they have not really done. Despite the fact that Anger still got on the podium on two occasions last year, he says that he actually had more to give, which is of course a small compliment to his colleagues.
– It was far from what I felt I could do and what I had in my body. There were two podium places and you have to take that with you, but it feels as if there was more to give, he says.
Myhlback can challenge Edvin Anger
However, the future looks brighter, says Anger. He says he himself is in better shape than ever. Halfvarsson and Poromaa are also focused on the WC year. In addition, there are hyper-interesting ones Alvar Myhlback in the junior ranks who may possibly get the chance at senior level later in the season.
Edvin Anger simply believes that the Swedish men’s national team has much more to give this year and he both believes and hopes that it will show in the statistics when the season is summed up.
– I don’t think it will be like this in the future. If you want to be the one who takes the most podium places this year, two will not be enough, I think more will be required. We have more people coming from below and I’m starting to grow into the role even more. If I take one more step, I know there will be more than two podium places, he says.
