Earth will send a message to aliens from a nearby

In 1962, Humanity launched Telstar 1, the first telecommunications satellite, making the first live television broadcast in mondovision. Among the first ground telecommunications stations exploiting this kind of satellite, there was that of Goonhilly Satellite Earth Stationa large radio communications site located at Goonhilly Downs, near Helston, on the peninsula of Lizard in Cornwall, England.

On October 4, 2022, it will again make it possible to make a great first by allowing members of the Meti collaboration (Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence) to send a series of messages radio destined for a possible technologically advanced civilization that would exist on one of the exoplanets what we think potentially habitable around the red dwarf Trappis-1, at 39 light years of the Sun approximately.

Trappist-1 is a dwarf star located 40 light years from Earth. Its size is comparable to that of the planet Jupiter. Using the planetary transit method, photometric observations from the ground and space revealed seven planets orbiting the ultracool dwarf. But what exactly are their characteristics? Discover exoplanets through our 9-episode web series. A video to be found every week on our Youtube channel. The Meti Collaboration is an organization founded by Douglas Vakoch, a graduate in psychology and history of science, and which partly follows some of the paths of the Seti program, from Carl Sagan : its purpose is to raise awareness among the general public about the search for extraterrestrial civilizations by designing and sending messages to their destination. Based in San Fransisco, the Meti organization also contributes to the program of theOptical Seti. In this case, it is a question in particular of detecting pulses laser unquestionably having characteristics of technosignatures — we know that there are cousins of lasers, massagerswhich are natural.

It is not the first time that a radio message intended for extraterrestrials, at least as technologically advanced as us, has been launched by the noosphere towards the stars and the Meti is not at its first blow either as Futura explained it in the previous article below.

So this time the target is the three exoplanets that we think are in the habitable zone around the Trappist-1 red dwarf. However, it is not enough to be in this zone for water liquid and life exist on these planets which are also thought to be telluric.

The Goonhilly station will begin by sending out a series of pulses with characteristics proving they are not of natural origin. Will follow impulses establishing a system of counting and then, the table of Mendeleev of the chemical elements and a coded description of atoms. The end of the sent signal will consist of pieces of music whose Ode 1. Ode to the Herald of God. A Beauty of the Earth by the Russian composer, electronic music and film soundtracks like those of Andrei Tarkovsky’s films (Solaris, in 1972 and Stalkerin 1979) and Eduard Artemyev.

There will also be pieces of dj and musicians performing at the Stihia Festival in Muynak, Uzbekistan, which aims to highlight the environmental impact of shrinking Aral Sea.

Of course, we would have to wait about 80 years for a possible response if the speed of light is indeed the speed limit of telecommunications and interstellar travel, which should not interfere much with great AI. One can also doubt the presence of ET so close to the Solar system but, if so, a return message would give us proof that the Milky Way and the observable cosmos are full of life, which would, of course, be philosophically very interesting information.

Extraterrestrials: a message sent in music

Article of Xavier Demeersmann published on 26/11/2017

At the initiative of the Sónar festival in Barcelona, in collaboration with scientists and the Meti, messages have been sent to a planetary system 12.4 light years from Earth where orbit a potentially habitable super-Earth. Researchers warn of the risks involved in appealing to possible hostile extraterrestrials.

On November 16, the anniversary of the sending of the famous message fromArecibo43 years ago, towards the great cluster of hercules (M13), some 25,000 light-years from Earth, the Meti (Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence) international and its partners, the Institute for Space Studies of Catalonia and the Sónar Festival (music and technologies) of Barcelona — which initiated the project –, announced that they had sent a message to GJ 273 b.

GJ 273 b is a super-Earth about three times more massive than our planet orbiting GJ 273, also called theLuyten’s stara red dwarf that shines in the constellation of the Little Dog. Located only 12.4 light-years from our Solar System, it is one of the potentially habitable exoplanets known closest to us. In other words, if this neighboring world (neighbor on a galactic scale!) is inhabited by civilizations able to decipher the message, we could receive an answer in just under 25 years, in 2042.

Three transmissions in binary code in two frequencies different radio stations were broadcast on October 16, 17 and 18 with the Eiscat’s 32-metre-diameter antenna (European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association) near Tromsø, Norway. The result of a collaboration of artists and scientists, the messages of “Sonar Calling GJ 273b” include, in addition to greetings, tutorials » mathematics and 33 musical compositions signed among others by Autechre, Jean-Miche Jarre, Matmos, Kode9, Laurent Garnier… Expected arrival date in the “receivers” of GJ 273 b, November 3, 2030! Two other transmissions, still in the direction of the super-earth, are planned for April 2018.

Should we try to communicate with extraterrestrials or not?

Like thephysicist stephen hawking who, on several occasions, advocated not to attract the attention of extraterrestrial civilizationswhich could be tempted to invade us, several researchers have recently reacted to the sending of these messages, regretting the initiative of the Meti, to announce our existence. “It’s like shouting in a forest before you know if there are tigersfrom lions bears or other dangerous animals”denounced Dan Werthimer, a member of Seti interviewed by NewScientist. “98% of astronomers and researchers from the Seti Institute believe that Meti is potentially dangerous and not a good idea. »

Douglas Vakoch, who leads the Meti — also called the “Active Seti” — replied that “any extraterrestrial on GJ 273 b capable of interstellar travel would also be advanced enough to already know of our existence”. Indeed, radio communications have been leaking from the Earth for almost a century, enough to be noticed for several decades by our possible closest neighbors. The researcher adds that in addition, it has been half a billion years since our planet displayed biosignaturesin his atmosphere detectable from afar…

Advanced extraterrestrial civilizations may therefore already be there and watching us, as the zoo hypothesis suggests. “What would happen if we went to a zoo and suddenly a zebra turns towards us, looks at us in the eyes and starts pounding prime numbers with his hoof?writes the leader of the San Francisco-based organization. It would establish a radically different relationship, one that we would surely try to respond to. This is the scenario we are testing by reporting Luyten’s star. » This star is only the first in the series. For Douglas Vakoch, it will take “repeat this process with 100 stars, or 1,000, or a million, before we detect a response”.

In video: when the Earth sent a message to the extraterrestrials

Article of Jean-Luc Goudetpublished on November 24, 2012

In the mid-1970s, two space probes, Voyager 1 and 2, set off to explore the gaseous planets . Their speed will allow them to leave the Solar System, making them ambassadors of humanity. Thanks to a video of Ina, let’s relive this moment of emotion when, on an idea by Carl Sagan, a message is addressed to hypothetical extraterrestrials.

  • go away quest for extraterrestrial life

On August 20, 1977, a rocket Titan 3E, equipped with a Centaur upper stage, propels to the outer planets To travel2, a probe over 700 kg , twin of Voyager 1, which will not leave until the following month. Its mission will be to fly over the four gas giants of our Solar System: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranusand Neptune . What she will do.

Its twin Voyager 1 will approach Jupiter and Saturn and then move away from the plane of the elliptical, ignoring Neptune and Uranusbut picking up speed, so that it is farther from us today than Voyager 2 and even the Pioneer 10 and 11 probes.

We have come out of our Solar System, seeking peace and friendship, to teach if asked, to learn if we are lucky » : this is the message of Kurt Waldheim, then Secretary General of the UN. There are others, engraved on a copper disc: photos, speeches, “hello! and songs, like this Johnny B.Good, a hit from the era sung by Chuck Berry, which can be heard in the report. The emotion is at its height. Georges Leclere confuses the Titan rocket with Saturn V. One day, this disk may encounter another civilization… © Ina

A bottle in the sea

Travel 1reached the edge of the Solar System in 2004 and Voyager 2 in 2007 . The first continues in the direction of the constellation of the Giraffe and the second towards that of Andromeda. The two probes, supplied with electricity by generatorswith radioisotopes always work and send their news to very small debit .

But the heating systems will soon give up the ghost and within a few years, the Voyager probes will be nothing more than two metal assemblies carrying two discs on which human beings have tried to tell their planet and their civilization, with songs birds, tunesmusic and speeches…
