On the night of August 13 to 14, 2004, at the Gatumba camp in Burundi, at least 150 Congolese Tutsi refugees from South Kivu, mostly women, children and the elderly, were massacred, and a hundred were injured. An attack attributed to the Burundian Hutu rebels of the National Liberation Forces (FNL). On Sunday August 13 and Monday August 14, 2023, members of the Banyamulenge community organized commemorative ceremonies in Bukavu.
