Dozens dead and even hundreds injured in a train accident

According to some reports, a third train might also be involved in the railway accident in Balasore, India.

A freight train and a passenger train collided on Friday at Balasore in the state of Odishan, about 200 km from the state capital Bhubaneswar.

Estimates of the death toll range from 13 to 50. About 400 people have been hospitalized.

Both trains derailed, about ten carriages were damaged, the authorities say.

There are close to 500 police and rescue workers at the scene of the accident. Up to two hundred people are estimated to be trapped.

In India, there are hundreds of railway accidents every year

Several hundred railway accidents occur in India every year, despite efforts to improve track safety.

News agency AP reports that more than 12 million people travel by train in India every day. There are approximately 14,000 trains in traffic every day.
