It was an eventful event when Liverpool visited London and Tottenham Hotspur stadium. In the pot was the opportunity to take over the league lead after Manchester City unexpectedly lost against Wolverhampton.
However, the chances dwindled considerably when Curtis Jones was sent off after just 25 minutes for an ugly tackle with an open sole on Yves Bissouma.
Just minutes later, Luis Díaz put the ball into the net but was blown off for offside. The replays showed that the margins were very small. Instead, the lead came three minutes later – for Tottenham.
James Madison played a clever cross to Richarlison who played in for Son Heung-Min who was able to slot the ball in behind Alisson Becker with ease.
Red card and offside goal
The conceding goal would come though. In added time in the first half, a pass reached Cody Gakpo, who turned in the penalty area and hit the ball into the net.
After an hour of play, Tottenham had a ball in the goal – almost identical to the first – but the linesman waved for offside.
Liverpool exhaled, but it was to get worse. In the 69th minute of the match, Diogo Jota received his second yellow card and was sent off as well.
Own goal decided
Despite playing with two men less for almost half an hour, a heroically fighting Liverpool, with a big-playing Alisson Becker at the back, looked long to ride out the storm against a pointless Tottenham.
But then with only seconds left in the game, in the sixth minute of overtime, Joël Matip sent the ball up into his own cross.
The victory means that Tottenham advance to second place in the table with 17 points after seven games. Liverpool is fourth with 16 points.
