Do you like programs in original version? On Netflix, it’s very easy to change the font, size, color and language of subtitles to suit your tastes, including on the TV app.
If you are a fan of series or cinema, you probably like to watch content in the original version (VO) to better appreciate the acting of the actors and completely immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the work – especially since the French version (VF ) turns out to be quite dubious in some cases. But unless you are perfectly bilingual, it is better to watch them in a subtitled version. Like other streaming video services, Netflix offers many settings to change the appearance of subtitles: font, text size and color, background or window color , the appearance and color of the drop shadow can thus be easily modified to adapt to your tastes and your vision. Not to mention of course the language, which you can change on the fly, while playing a film or series, to put them in French or English, for example, according to your preferences and your language skills.
Until now, it was only possible to customize subtitles via the web version of the platform or from the mobile application. Gold, based on statistical data from Conviva77% of the time spent in front of Netflix in the first quarter of 2022 was done from a connected television or game consoles. However, the demand for personalization of subtitles on this medium is high given that, according to a study by Verizon Media and Publicis Media published in 2019, 80% of Americans are more likely to finish watching a film, series or documentary if subtitles are available – enough to compensate for the poor audio quality of the platform. It was therefore time for Netflix to add this function on March 9, especially since its competitors Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu and YouTube also offer similar adjustments!
The subtitle customization offers three different sizes i.e. small, medium and large. It includes four color styles: classic white text, black text on a white background, white text on a black background, and yellow text on a black background. Please note that these customization options are not available for certain languages on Netflix. Unfortunately, it is currently impossible to enjoy it in Arabic, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Romanian and Thai.
This personalization is done both from a computer, with the web version of Netflix, and on a phone or tablet, via the mobile application. Since the update, you can also do it from the TV app – however, the function does not exist with Apple TV, since tvOS already offers many options for the style of subtitles. Note also that the modification of the subtitle display settings applies to all the devices on which the account is connected, and it is not necessary to repeat the operation by changing the medium.
Change the look of Netflix subtitles from a computer
- Go to Netflix website and log in with your usual identifiers if you do not automatically arrive on your account.
- On the page Who is thisclick on your profile picture.
- You arrive on the Netflix home screen.
- At the top right, hover over your profile picture and click on Account.
- Go down to the section Profiles and Parental Controls. Click on your profile picture.
- A list of parameters appears.
- Click on Edit opposite the label Displaying subtitles.
- Section Displaying subtitles opens.
- Make the desired changes and observe the result in the preview window. When you want, click Register.
- You automatically return to the section Account. A message is displayed on a green background to inform you that your preferences have been updated.
Change Netflix Subtitle Appearance from iOS Device
On iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, changing the appearance of subtitles is not done on Netflix directly but in the device settings.
- Go to section Settings of your device.
- Click on Accessibility then on Subtitles and closed captions.
- Click on Style.
- Select an existing style or create a new style of subtitles thanks to the proposed parameters: size, color and font of the text, color and opacity of the background, text opacity, border style, highlighting.
Change Netflix Subtitle Appearance from Android Device
The procedure is practically identical to that carried out on a computer.
- Open the Netflix app on your smartphone or tablet and log in with your usual credentials if you don’t automatically arrive on your account.
- At the bottom right of the home page, click menu icon representing three strokes.
- Click on Account.
- Section Account Netflix opens in your mobile’s web browser.
- Go down to the section Profiles and Parental Controls. Click on your profile picture.
- A list of parameters appears.
- Click on Edit opposite the label Displaying subtitles.
- Make the desired changes and observe the result in the preview window. When you want, click Register.
- You automatically return to the section Account. A message is displayed on a green background to inform you that your preferences have been updated.
