Disney’s worst flop in years comes to Disney+ later this month — sci-fi flick reportedly posting nearly $150 million in losses

Disneys worst flop in years comes to Disney later this

You may not have noticed Strange World’s theatrical release. The sci-fi animation film from Disney went down without a murmur. After its disappointing start in the US, the financial loss has been estimated at up to $147 million. But Strange World deserved it when one of the biggest Disney flops in recent years to go down in history? If you ask yourself this question, you will soon be able to convince yourself of this at home.

Strange World is coming to Disney+ in December

Strange World is coming December 23, 2022 to Disney+. The streaming service announced this in a press release.

The provider is apparently speculating that families are looking for entertainment together during the Christmas season – and maybe want something new. Strange World could be right there.

What is the Disney animated film about?

The Clades were once a family of legendary explorers. Son of Searcher Clade was no exception. At least not until one day his father Jaeger disappeared without a trace. He then gave up his adventurous spirit and became a farmer.

But then one day the president and expedition leader Callisto Mal shows up in person at his door and asks the now grown man for help. Now Searcher breaks down with his wife Meridian and his son Ethan to his last and at the same time most important mission up: into the dangerous world of Avalonia, where they have to find a special creature.

The film was directed by Baymax director Don Hall and Raya and final dragon co-writer Qui Nguyen.

Why is Strange World such a big failure?

With the voices of Jake Gyllenhaal, Gabrielle Union and Dennis Quaid, the animated film was not always received with critical acclaim. He has an okay 73 percent average on Rotten Tomatoes. But that doesn’t explain his poor performance at the box office.

With an estimated budget of around $180 million, Strange World has only grossed $30 million in its home country of the United States. Worldwide, the total result since the start at the end of November is almost 54 million dollars. The film would have to come to over 247 million at the end of its season in order to break in the budget and marketing costs. Deadline therefore calculated one after the start possible loss of $147 million.

Allegations were then made online that Disney had advertised the film poorly because it was the first Disney film with a gay protagonist. The streaming start gives the film at least that Chance to reach new audienceswhich may not have even known Strange World existed before.
