Discord’s conference rooms are getting a major update with three highly anticipated new features: support for video, screen sharing, and text chat. This should delight budding streamers!

Discord’s conference rooms (internships in English) are very popular with instant messaging users. They make it easy to organize community events in which speakers speak and spectators listen – avoiding the cacophony of the usual living rooms where everyone speaks at the same time and where you have to turn your microphone on and off at all times. end of field. Launched in March 2021, conference rooms only supported audio so far. But on February 21, 2023, the platform is getting a major upgrade with the arrival of three much-requested new features: video support, screen sharing, and text chat. In his press releaseDiscord explains that “These additions to conference rooms allow users to showcase themselves in front of their virtual audience or share a visual aid on their screen during a presentation, and their community will have a place to discuss, comment and chat with emojis when something exciting happens.” What facilitates the exchanges even more!

Discord: video, screen sharing and text chat are coming to living rooms

Thanks to the new update, speakers in conference rooms will be able to appear in video – up to 5 cameras at the same time -, perform screen sharing – one at a time -, while spectators will be able to react using the chat. Note that the one who shares his screen may be different from the five people who use the video. Spectators may be invited to “to get on stage” to become speakers in turn, and moderators can be appointed to regulate the conversation space. The interface therefore sees the appearance of two new buttons, video and screen sharing, similar to those of voice rooms and private conversations.

For its part, text chat in conference rooms works the same way as for voice rooms, by selecting “Show chat” at the top right, which displays the part dedicated to conversations. Note that administrators also have the option of adding music on hold for the audience to make them wait before the start of a conference – a function reserved for enhanced rooms however – which can of course be individually muted by viewers using a dedicated button.

To be able to access these new options, the Community function – which is free – of the Discord server must be activated, which then allows the use of video or screen sharing in conference rooms with a maximum of 50 spectators. – twice as much as the usual current limit in a standard voice channel. To increase this limit – still using the video function – a level 2 or 3 “boost” must be used. Thus, level 2 boosted servers will be able to accommodate up to 150 people, and level 3 boosted servers up to 300 people. This should appeal to streamers, who are used to using the platform to broadcast their games and interact with their audience!
