Black-clad police stormed the embassy, breaking in and arresting a former vice president.
“A clear violation of international law and Mexico’s sovereignty,” said Mexico’s president, López Obrador.
A huge row has broken out between Mexico and Ecuador, and Mexico is now cutting diplomatic relations with the Latin American country, according to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
It was late on Friday that police entered the Mexican embassy in the Ecuadorian capital Quito. There they arrested Ecuador’s former vice president Jorge Glas.
– This is not possible! It’s absolutely crazy, said Roberto Conseco, head of the Mexican consulate, after the arrest to local media.
– Yes. I am very worried. They can kill him, he continues.
Mexico’s president rages
Mexico’s president, López Obrador is furious after the arrest.
“A clear violation of international law and the sovereignty of Mexico,” writes López Obrador on X, stating that he has ordered the immediate termination of diplomatic relations with Mexico.
Jorge Glas was vice president of Ecuador from 2013-2017, but was forced to leave his post after being sentenced to several years in prison for corruption. Glas was paroled last year and then fled into the Mexican embassy where he applied for political asylum.
