Desperate situation in Haiti – UN opens air corridor with emergency aid

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday that the political parties in Haiti are trying to agree on representatives for the transitional council proposed to rule the country. But things are slow and the internationally backed plan is being rejected by several politicians and gang leaders.

– This is our country, foreigners have no right to interfere. It is up to us to unite and get this country in order, says a resident on the streets of Port-au-Prince.

Desperate situation

The violence in the country has made an already difficult situation for millions of Haitians even more difficult. According to the UN, four out of the eleven million inhabitants have poor access to food.

Violence makes it difficult to distribute food to those in need. It is feared that the closure of ports and airports will make this work even more difficult.

In order to evacuate embassy personnel from the capital Port-au-Prince, the Dominican Republic has established emergency corridors in cooperation with Haitian authorities.

In the hope of curbing the situation, there is a curfew in the Quest department, according to a Prime Minister’s spokesperson. Exceptions will continue to apply until April 3.
