Demolition begins at old Sarnia Colborne Road fire station

Sarnia firefighters moved last week into a new station on Colborne Road and Wednesday the building it replaced was coming down.

The city spent $6.7 million building a new 800-square-meter (8,610 square foot) station to replace the smaller 1954-era building.

On Wednesday, heavy equipment was at the site tearing down the old Sarnia Fire Station No. 3.

The new station, sitting behind the original, is Accessibility Act-compliant with a diesel exhaust capturing system, a bunker gear extraction and drying system, a standby generator, and more living space for firefighters.

Removing the old station will allow fire trucks to use the new building’s drive-thru bay while leaving and returning.

The new station took longer to build that expected, mainly because of supply chain issues, the city has said.

When the project began, construction was expected to be completed in 2022.
