The US House of Representatives on Tuesday approved legislation to protect same-sex marriage.

The number of votes was 267–157. All Democrats voted yes along with 47 Republicans. In the debate before, the Democrats argued intensely and personally, while the Republicans described the change in the law as unnecessary rather than criticizing same-sex marriage.

The proposal now goes on to the Senate, where the outcome is more uncertain.
