Daniel’s basement flooded: Bubbling in the toilet

The heavy rain has made it difficult for residents in the areas around Örebro and Karlskoga during Sunday. Daniel Collin, who lives in Karlskoga, is one of those whose basement was flooded due to the harsh weather.
– I first heard that it started bubbling in the toilet, something I had never experienced before, he says.

It was between eight and nine o’clock on Sunday morning that it started to sound strange at Daniel Collin’s house. Soon he realized that rainwater had begun to enter through one of the wells down in the basement.

– After a lot of back and forth, I called 112 and was told that there were more residents in the area who had the same problem. After a while they came here and helped pump out water, he says.

Blessing in disguise

Later on Sunday afternoon, Daniel and his brother had managed to clean up most of the water with the help of a wet vacuum cleaner. Now a dehumidifier is in place, but at the moment he doesn’t know how much water damage the basement is.

– However, I have been lucky because I have almost only concrete in the walls down here. There are no wooden walls that the water could have gone up into. But things that were on the floor are completely destroyed, so it’s just a matter of throwing everything away, he says.

– It could have risen even higher. One room in the basement has survived, so I’ve been a bit lucky in my bad luck.

He has been in contact with his insurance company, which will follow up on the matter on Monday. Until then, the advice is to save what can be saved.

“Been a messy day”

During the day, SOS Alarm received 18 calls from flood victims in Karlskoga.

– An awful lot of alarms came in during the morning for a short time, and they came only a few minutes apart. There has not been a danger to life-alarm, but there has been a danger to property, so the rescue service has had to go around address after address to help pump out water, says Nicole Schabo at SOS Alarm, who is responsible for the rescue region Bergslagen.

– It has been a messy day, you could say.

More rain expected

Although the worst of the rain has passed the area, more precipitation is expected.

– There will be more rain in the next 24 hours, but what passed today with the combined showers left this morning and has passed slowly to the north, says meteorologist Martin Hagman.

– Tomorrow we have a new band of heavy showers that will lie over the middle parts of Svealand along the Mälardalen.
