The double murder in Linköping has become a TV series • That’s how the trial was in the high-profile case
EAfter 16 years, Daniel Nyqvist could be arrested for the double murder in Linköping, which has now been filmed in the series “Breakthrough”.
During the trial, he stated that he had previously had thoughts of killing and saw an image in front of him.
– It was like three dots, so to speak, it’s hard to explain. I had to kill two people, said Daniel Nyqvist.
In October 2004, Mohamad Ammouri and 56-year-old Anna-Lena Svensson were murdered in Linköping. The victims had no connection to each other and even though the police managed to secure DNA from the killer, it took a long time before they could identify a suspected perpetrator.
The solution: Mapped family trees with DNA
The investigation became one of the largest and most extensive in Swedish criminal history. It took 16 years before the police managed to identify and arrest the then 37-year-old Daniel Nyqvist.
The breakthrough came when the police chose to use a different method. In the hope of being able to find the perpetrator, the genealogist Peter Sjölund was brought into the investigation.
By mapping family trees several hundred years back, Peter Sjölund was able to find Daniel Nyqvist, who was sentenced to forensic psychiatric care with a special discharge examination.
– I wrote out the entire solution with all relationships and everything and locked it in an envelope in my wife’s gun safe here in Härnösand, because if I were to run over a moose on the road, it wouldn’t be so good if the solution disappeared, said Peter Sjölund.
Stated he felt compelled
During the interrogation in the district court, Nyqvist stated that he had not been feeling well and that he felt compelled to kill.
– I would get my peace of mind, get rid of my thoughts, said Nyqvist.
He also stated that he had thoughts of killing before and that he saw an image in front of him before he committed the double murder. According to Nyqvist, it didn’t matter which people he killed.
– It was like three dots, so to speak, it’s hard to explain. I had to kill two people.
This week, the Netflix series “The Breakthrough” premiered, which in four episodes depicts the events from the murder in 2004 until the arrest in 2020.
TV4 has previously produced the documentary “The DNA detective: Double murder in Linköping”, which can be seen on TV4 Play.
