Cyprus’s parliament on Thursday approved new legislation that tightens the sentence for the murder of women to life imprisonment.

The bill has been developed by Annita Demetriou, the country’s first female president, and comes against the background that relationship violence is increasing sharply.

Since 2019, 20 women have been murdered in Cyprus. Last month, for example, an 82-year-old woman was killed by her 84-year-old husband. Seven of the women have fallen victim to a serial killer.

The number of cases of violence in close relationships has increased by 67 percent from 2020 and by 159 percent since 2019.
