A former cricket star who has ruled Pakistan since 2018 Imran Khan threatens to lose its dominance.
The Pakistani parliament is voting today on Khan’s confidence in a vote that Khan is expected to lose.
Khan’s dominance wobbles for many reasons.
He initially rose to power with the support of Pakistan’s influential army, but since then his relationship with the army has weakened.
Proponents of Khan say there is also an attempt by foreign powers to influence Pakistan’s internal affairs. Khan has close ties to Russia and this is known to plague the United States.
Khan visited Moscow to meet with the president Vladimir Putinia on the same day that Russia invaded Ukraine.
Khan’s party has tried to block the vote on several occasions on the grounds that it would be foreign interference in the country’s affairs.
However, the country’s Supreme Court ordered the vote to be held. Khan has threatened not to recognize its results.
