Covid flu… Acute respiratory infections explode as the holidays approach

The incidence rate of Covid cases is still increasing as the end-of-year holidays approach. Last week, from December 4 to 10, it reached 141 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the network. Sentinels, knowing that many cases of Covid are not detected in the absence of a major testing campaign. This corresponds to 93,757 people nationwide.

The incidence rate is also increasing sharply for acute respiratory infections (ARI). It was, also for last week, around 488 per 100,000 inhabitants, a doubling of cases in less than a month.

Covid-19 thus reappears, as it has at regular intervals in recent years, in new forms. After the variants EG.5.1, nicknamed Eris, and BA.2.8.6, also called “Pirola”, at the start of the school year, it is now the turn of JN.1 to worry the health authorities. This sub-variant of Omicron should be less recognized by our immune system, which explains its predominance.

Although it is currently the subject of increased surveillance, particularly as the end-of-year holidays approach, a period conducive to the circulation of viruses, it is not responsible for an increase in forms serious or hospitalizations.
