Covid 19 new study on places of contamination in France

A study looked at the analysis of the circumstances of contamination by the coronavirus in France. What are the places most at risk? Do we have to close everything again?

[EN VIDÉO] Are we protected against Covid having been infected?
Coronavirus infection induces an acquired immune response. But for how long is it effective against variants?

A French study studying the places of contamination by the virus has just been published in the prestigious journal The Lancet. This study was carried out jointly by the French health insurance and the Institut Pasteur. It analyzes the factors associated with contamination by the Covid-19 virus. More specifically, the objectives of the study are to identify the places and behaviors that promote infection.

Methodology of the study

The study took place in France and includes two groups:

  • 12,634 people tested positive for the coronavirus between May 23 and August 13, 2021. Among these people, 8,644 (68%) were infected with the Delta variant. The participants received a questionnaire in order to identify the circumstances of their contamination;
  • 5,560 uninfected people (controls) recruited during the same period. The control group was matched to the first group according to age, sex, place of residence, and exposure to the virus.

The period studied corresponds to the moment when public places began to reopen in France. Museums reopened on May 19, restaurant interiors on June 9, nightclubs on July 9 … This is also the time when the Delta variant became the majority in France.

Favorable factors: transport, children, nightclubs… and football!

The transport are a place of contamination: car shared (+ 30%), taxi (+ 50%), metro (+ 20%), train (+ 30%). The riskiest mode of transport in matter contamination is the aircraft: + 70% contamination.

The presence of children in the entourage promotes contamination

In those over 40, the presence of children in the entourage favors contaminations, + 30% of contaminations if the children are between 11 and 15 years to + 90% of contaminations if they are children of less than 3 years.

Nightclubs are a frequent place of contamination among people under 40. In addition, an increase in contamination with the Delta variant has been observed in men under the age of 40 during private parties or inside bars between June 9 and July 9, during theEuro football so.

No excess risk for places of culture or worship, shops and restaurants

On the other hand, there does not seem to be an additional risk of contamination for certain public places. These results should nevertheless be taken with a grain of salt:

  • no excess risk in shops, if we exclude local shops;
  • no over-risk in restaurants, but during a summer period when a major part of the service is done in Terrace.

These are intermediate results. The study, called ComCor, is still ongoing. This could provide us with particularly relevant information on the circumstances of contamination by the Omicron variant.
