14 Sri Lankans have been sentenced to several years in prison in France for extensive people smuggling. The operation must have been controlled from a grocery store in the community of Sérifontaine north of Paris.

The league is said to have brought people from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to Europe, many with the aim of reaching the UK.

Over 45,000 people crossed the English Channel from Europe in 2022. That’s more than 17,000 more than the previous year, according to British authorities.
