And Martin Dahlin reveals the most unexpected thing about WC 94.

That unforgettable World Cup summer in 1994 will forever live on with all Swedes. When a bunch of blue and yellow soccer players shocked the whole world and took bronze in the USA.

The hero Dahlin

One of the great heroes during the feat in the 1994 World Cup was the striker Martin Dahlin. He came to the WC in the USA as a top scorer and scored goals for both Malmö FF and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Dahlin also scored seven goals in the WC qualifiers for Blågult and was the given star player at the front of the attack. He wouldn’t disappoint either with four goals and three assists in five games in the World Cup play-offs, but was still outshone by fellow striker Kenneth Andersson who excelled with five complete hits during the WC.

Remember WC 94

30 years have passed since the fantastic WC summer of 1994 and Martin Dahlin still remembers it well.
– For me, a WC is the biggest thing you can be a part of. It somehow feels incredible that you were allowed to participate, he says in an interview with Dagens Nyheter.
– It is difficult to single out any single detail. It’s more about the overall impression. It was a dream experience. We had a bloody strong team, we had knocked France out in the qualifiers. And the way we did it in the WC I am very proud of. We challenged the best, and we didn’t do it with netball, but with attacking football. It was entertaining to watch us play.

But how could it really go so well? Dahlin explains that they had a very good team and above all a very nice community.
– I think it was the key to success, that we functioned as a group. Then it was of course extremely important that the frame from the European Championship 1992 was still there. It was a big plus, the two years we had to build on. If I remember correctly, we had the youngest squad in the WC, he says in the interview.
