Clary sage essential oil is an ally for women: it is used in the context of amenorrhea and premenopause to manage the various symptoms that can then appear.

What are the benefits of clary sage EO?

Clary sage essential oil has different properties:

Is it effective against hot flashes?

Clary sage EO is effective against hot flashes because of its different actions (“oestrogen-like”, antispasmodic, relaxing and phlebotonic). Since hot flashes are often associated with menopause, this EO is very often recommended in the management of various ailments related to these periods of hormonal imbalance.

Is it effective against perspiration?

Clary sage EO helps to regulate thermogenesis in the hypothalamus and thus fight against excessive sweating. “Its “estrogen-like” particularity is interesting when one is confronted with symptoms due to an estrogen deficiency: the appearance of night sweats as may be the case during menopause“, notes D. Briol Roque. In practice: two to 4 drops of EO of clary sage to distribute under the armpits.

Is it effective in case of painful periods?

Clary sage EO will also act on various disorders of the menstrual cycle at puberty or as part of dysmenorrhea (pelvic pain before or after menstruation), heavy periods, menstrual pain or painful breasts. “She will act on circulatory disorders and help release tension that there may be at the level of the small basin”. Additional treatment with clary sage essential oil should be considered in the context of painful menstruation, as other sources may be the cause: liver problem and lack of Omega-3.

Does it have virtues for menopause?

For postmenopausal women, clary sage EO will allow management of the various symptoms: hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, mood swings and/or depression. From a mixture of 5 drops of clary sage EO in 2 teaspoons of macadamia or jojoba oil, massage the chest, lower abdomen and arms when needed.

Does it slow down hair growth?

Clary sage EO will have an effect hair growth retarder : after depilation, you can make an anointing with 1 drop of HE for 4 drops of vegetable oil, and apply this mixture twice a day for 3 weeks.

It should not be used in women who have had breast, ovarian or uterine cancer or in case of fibroids.

It is mainly used dermal in massage, in diluted form with a vegetable oil, almond or olive, for example. “You can also place a few drops in the neck or on the wrist“. We can also use diffusion or inhalation, but you should know that the smell of clary sage is very particular. “A few drops breathed on a handkerchief inhaled will soothe a sudden stress before returning to a meeting or before an exam, before sleeping or to calm the apprehension of the arrival of painful periods…” As for the oral route, it must be used under medical prescription. “It must be taken as a 3-week cure: 2 drops of HE in a spoonful of honey 3 times a day. The stop between each cure will allow to better evaluate the action of HE“, notes Diane Briol Roque.

What are the side effects of clary sage EO?

There are no side effects for clary sage EO. Clary sage does not have ketones, so it is non-toxic and more tolerated than common sage. Before any use, it is recommended to test clary sage EO in the bend of the elbow 48 hours before its first use. In adolescents over 15 and young women, it should only be used during menstruation.

What are the contraindications of clary sage EO?

The contraindications of clary sage essential oil are linked to its “oestrogen-like” action: it should not be used in women who have had hormone-dependent cancer (breast, ovary, uterus), nor by those suffering from mastosis or fibroidnor at pregnant or breastfeeding women, and children before puberty.
