Firefighters from all 19 municipal stations will go door-to-door, offering to check residential smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
The CHiRP program, now in its third year, offers important fire safety education to residents within their own homes, a department media release said this week.
During the safety checks, firefighters will examine, test and replace smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as needed. They will also ensure the devices are correctly located and not expired.
“We do more than just check alarms,” CKFR community safety officer Whitney Burk said in the release. “We talk to residents about their safety needs, and I can’t emphasize enough the simplicity, effectiveness, and cost-free nature of the CHiRP checks.

“The entire process typically takes no more than 10 to 15 minutes and is reassurance that you and your loved ones are safeguarded against fire and carbon monoxide dangers,” she added.
To help increase awareness of the upcoming event, firefighters have visited schools throughout Chatham-Kent this month as part of Fire Prevention Month.
These visits included distributing promotional items and educating students about fire safety practices.
Residents who aren’t at home or are unavailable on Saturday still can take part.
Those interested in scheduling a CHiRP home safety check can make a request by calling 519-360-1998, or visiting ckfire.ca, where they can enter their address, as well as a preferred day of the week and time for a visit.
