“There is a substantial probability that ice will form on our sidewalks,” municipal officials said in a release. “Although the municipality plows all sidewalks in the winter, property owners/occupants. . . (outside) Downtown Business Areas, are required to pre-treat any sidewalk surrounding their property within 24 hours.”

Bylaw 178-2019 also requires sidewalk de-icing within 48 hours after a snowfall, they said.

Suggestions offered include:

  • Clearing snow before it settles, hardens and packs down.
  • Chipping ice during the day when it’s softer and easier to break.
  • Sanding or salting sidewalks to increase traction or melt ice.

Convictions of contravening the bylaw carry a fine ranging from $50 to $50,000, the release said.

Public Works staff are monitoring weather forecasts and crews will salt and plow as required to keep roads as safe as possible, municipal officials said.
