Chad challenges the appointment of Dieudonne Evou Mekou as head

Chad is contesting the appointment of Cameroonian Evou Mekou Dieudonné as president of the Development Bank of Central African States, BDEAC, based in Brazzaville. He was appointed in April by the Cameroonian President, Paul Biya, in his capacity as current president of the Economic Community of Central African States (Cemac). The Chadian authorities consider that the procedure was not respected.

It took a month for Ndjamena to react to this cringe-inducing nomination. In the absence of a statutory meeting, the Chadian authorities waited for the visit of the outgoing BDEAC president on Thursday to express their disagreement. Fortunato Ofa Mbo Nchama was received by the Chadian transitional president who expressed Chad’s surprise to him.

A position relayed by Tahir Hamid Nguilin, Chadian Minister of Finance and Budget: “ Appointments follow the rotation criteria in alphabetical order. Chad has not led the BDEAC for very long in terms of a full mandate. And currently, Chad is next. »

Ndjamena awaits a review of the decision

Ndjamena recalled that the president of the development institution is generally appointed during a summit of heads of state or during a council of ministers.

This procedure must be respected, pleads the Chadian Minister of the Economy, Mahamat Hamid Koua: “ We believe that the decision will be corrected so that the rules of governance of our institutions are respected. What we can say is that in the days to come, we expect to have decisions in the direction of correction. »

The heads of state of the six member countries of the Economic Community of Central African States who are to appoint the boss of the BDEAC have not met since 2018.
