Central Elgin man charged with second degree murder in Sparta shooting

One man is dead and a 36-year-old man charged with second-degree murder following a New Year’s Day shooting in Sparta, southeast of St. Thomas.

Police responded to the reported shooting at a North Street residence in the village about 6:50 pm Saturday, Elgin OPP said Sunday.

An injured man was taken to hospital where he later died, police said.

Police say they don’t believe the incident was random, and that there is no threat to public safety.

Police were withholding the identity of the man who died, pending family notification.

Elgin OPP are investigating, under direction by the OPP’s criminal investigation branch.

Devon Vandendriessche, 36, of Central Elgin is charged with second-degree murder and remains in custody, scheduled to appear in court in St. Thomas on Friday.
