Caroline Seger quits the national team – after 18 years in blue and yellow

No player has made more international football matches for Sweden. If Caroline Victory playing in the Nations League final against Spain on Tuesday, she lands on 241 appearances in the A national team shirt.

— Now I have come to a decision, after 18 years in the national team, that it is over. It’s sad, but it’s true, says Seger in an interview on the Swedish Football Association’s website.

The big surprise in the European Championship squad 2005

She made her national team debut in 2005, and at just 20 years old, she became the big surprise in the Swedish European Championship squad that same year.

“Afterwards, everyone knows who Caroline Seger is.” I will decide the whole EC, said Seger at a press conference in May 2005.

That was not the case. But since then she has grown to become the main figure of the national team and led Sweden to several heavy medals: silver in the Olympics in 2016 and 2021, WC bronze in 2011, 2019 and 2023.

But now it will soon be over for the team captain, who has also been at the forefront when it comes to fighting for the rights of women’s footballers.

— When I look back on all the years that have passed and how it has turned out, I am enormously proud to have been part of that work. The change in everything and how it has grown, how the conditions have improved, and that everything you fought for has now become the way you yourself obviously wished you had it from the very beginning, says Seger to svenskfotboll.se
