If Charles became the new monarch of the United Kingdom when Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8, he will be officially crowned on May 6, 2023 in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey. In keeping with tradition, the ceremony will be led by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Camilla, the wife of Charles III, will also be crowned queen consort during the ceremony. It will thus be the first double coronation since that of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the future “Queen Mother” under Elizabeth II, in 1937.
