Bursary established in memory of Norfolk physiotherapist

Two years after the death of Waterford physiotherapist Jeff Scott, his family is pleased that a bursary in his name means Scott’s legacy will live on.

“Our family is big on education and Jeff was always supporting young people through sponsoring youth sports teams in the area,” said Scott’s father, Jack Scott.

“He was keen on helping people so this is a great legacy for him and it will continue for years.”

Scott died on a foggy Nov. 25, 2020 evening, as he was standing at the end of his Waterford driveway. He was hit by a driver who came through the ditch.

The driver was charged with careless driving causing death but the charge was later dismissed, frustrating the Scott family who had been left out of any victim communications.

The Scott family have filed a multi-million dollar negligence lawsuit in civil court and the driver has retained a lawyer and filed a counterclaim.

The bursary, begun and supported by the Rotary Club of Simcoe, will award $1,500 annually to a resident of Norfolk County who graduates from a Norfolk high school and is enrolled in a post-secondary program leading to a career in the medical arts, such as physical therapy, kinesiology, nursing, massage therapy, dental hygiene or respiratory therapy.

The first two awards have already been presented to students.

The bursary fund has already amassed tens of thousands of dollars, said Scott.

“It’s really touching for those of us in the family to see that support from Rotarians and those who knew and loved Jeff,” said Scott.

Donations to the fund can be made through the Rotary Club but the bursary will be managed through the Norfolk County Community Foundation.

To contribute to the Jeff Scott Memorial Fund Bursary Award for the Medical Arts. Checks can be written to the Rotary Club of Simcoe, PO Box 1, Simcoe, ON, N3Y 4K1 or by e-transfer through [email protected].
