Brantford stamp show returns Jan 14

If you have been missing philately, you can get your fix in about the time it takes to mail a letter.

After a two-year absence because of the pandemic, the Brantford Stamp Club’s annual show makes a return on Jan. 2, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Branlyn Community Center, 238 Brantwood Park Rd.

Philately – the hobby of stamp collecting – encourages people to study and collect stamps, be they from certain countries or featuring notable persons and events.

The show will feature 12 dealers who buy and sell stamps, door prizes, a silent auction and a youth booth for children under the age of 18.

Club members will be available to discuss their hobby.

Admission is free. A snack counter will be available.

Formed in 1938, the club’s inaugural show was in 1972 for the Postal History Society of Ontario.

That was followed in 1974 with a show to mark the centennial of the invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell. An eight-cent telephone stamp was issued that year to celebrate the milestone.

A three-day show took place in June 1977 to commemorate Brantford’s centennial as an incorporated city.

The club’s shows became annual events in 2004.
