Utrecht – Utrecht also reacted with relief to the conviction of Desi Bouterse. The former Surinamese president was sentenced to twenty years in prison today for his role in the December murders in 1982. “People are not happy, but they are reassured,” says Radj Ramcharan, secretary of the Asha foundation, a volunteer organization of Surinamese Hindustanis in Utrecht. “It must be given a place within society and I hope that people learn from it.”
