Young adult book adaptations were popular in the 2000s and 2010s thanks to Harry Potter, Twilight and The Hunger Games. Every studio in Hollywood wanted one own comparable film series wanted to establish. In 2018, 20th Century Fox ventured into The Darkest Minds novels by Alexandra Bracken.

In four volumes, Bracken imagined a dystopian world in which an epidemic has killed almost all of the children on earth. The children who survived developed superpowers, which makes them a danger in the eyes of the government. They are persecuted and imprisoned – we also find out about this in the first film.
