Foreign Minister Tobias Billström (M) points out November 28–29 as the date when Sweden can join NATO.

– This is the time frame, if one is to start from Stoltenberg’s time indications, when this process must be completed, he says.

Tobias Billström is happy about today’s announcement that Turkish President Erdogan has submitted the Swedish NATO application to parliament.

– It is of course gratifying. This is the first step of three, it now goes to parliament for consideration and voting and then it goes back to President Erdogan for a final signature, and then it’s done.

In an internal letter to NATO’s member states, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has pointed out a meeting of foreign ministers in November, when he assumes that Sweden is a member.

Tobias Billström also brings up this date next month, that is November 28–29.

– This is the time frame, if one is to start from Stoltenberg’s time indications, when this process must be completed, he says.

Prior to that, the Turkish parliament must have ratified the application and Sweden’s documents must be deposited by Billström with the US State Department.

– I don’t want to speculate about the time frame, but if NATO’s secretary general has sent a letter and declared that we will be a member at the end of November at this previously decided meeting of foreign ministers, then these are the weeks we are talking about, says Billström.
