Not every Marvel film is automatically a hit. We saw this just last year with The Marvels, which became the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first mega-flop. Sony’s rival Marvel universe has also had to have one in recent years bitter setback plug in. This setback is called Morbius.

In the failed Marvel film Morbius, Jared Leto is thirsty for blood as the anti-hero

The Jared Leto-led superhero film opened in theaters in March 2022. Almost two years later it celebrates its free TV premiere. In between there are two bitter defeats at the box office. Yes, Morbius flopped twice in a rowdespite being the No. 1 topic of conversation on the internet for weeks.

Morbius is part of Sony’s Marvel Universe, which was founded by Venom in 2018. After the limping symbiote, another anti-hero introduces himself: Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto), a renowned doctor who suffers from a rare blood disease and does everything he can to find a cure for it.

As is so often the case in Marvel’s comic adventures, the central experiment in the Morbius film adaptation goes wrong and an innocent character becomes a shady figure who causes fear and terror. Morbius turns into a vampire. Now he needs blood to survive. But obtaining it is not that easy.

Venom was a Marvel high-flyer at the box office, while Morbius failed twice

Although the initial situation of the film promises a stirring conflict that affects the protagonist of the story positioned between good and evil, Morbius couldn’t attract enough people to the cinema to match the success of Venom. Because it grossed $850 million in its first screen outing.

With a budget of $75 million (excluding marketing costs), Morbius only grossed $167 million, as documented by Box Office Mojo. For a Marvel blockbustr that is clearly too little. Morbius failed with critics and audiences – and became the laughing stock of the Internet.

Numerous memes made the rounds on social networks such as Twitter. In particular, the exclamation “It’s morbin’ time” dominated the, er, discourse. Studio Sony was then encouraged to release Morbius two months after its original launch to bring it to the cinema again. This time too, the film was not a success.

According to a report by the business magazine Forbes, Morbius had two flops in a row. But Sony’s Marvel universe isn’t over yet. Three more films await us this year: Madame Web (theatrical release: February 14, 2024), Kraven the Hunter (August 29, 2024) and Venom 3 (November 7, 2024).
