US President Joe Biden congratulates Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after Monday’s agreement that opens the door for Swedish NATO membership.

“President Biden congratulates President Erdogan on the agreement he reached with Swedish Prime Minister Kristersson and NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg to send Sweden’s accession protocol to NATO to parliament for ratification,” the White House wrote in a statement.

The two presidents met on Tuesday during the NATO summit in Vilnius and discussed, among other things, bilateral cooperation between the United States and Turkey.

“They also discussed regional issues of mutual interest, including their continued support for Ukraine and the importance of maintaining stability in the Aegean Sea,” the White House wrote.
