A study carried out by researchers from Florida Atlantic University reveals that the straps of our watches, including connected ones, are real breeding grounds for bacteria, which are sometimes dangerous for the body. Fortunately, there are very simple ways to clean them.

Rubber and plastic even more dangerous

The overwhelming majority of bracelets studied (95%) were contaminated, knowing that those made of rubber and plastic had a higher number of bacteria. This is because porous and static surfaces tend to attract bacteria more and even colonize them. Conversely, those in gold and silver did not show much. Note that there are no significant differences depending on whether the bracelets are worn by men or by women.

    Athletes particularly concerned

The most worrying thing is that many dangerous bacteria were found during this study, such as staphylococci or even E. coli, which in some cases can cause serious illness.

Another finding is that the number of staphylococci is highest on bracelets worn by athletes, which underlines the need to disinfect them regularly after practicing an activity, especially indoors, in contact with other people. .

A disinfectant spray to overcome it

As for the best way to overcome these bacteria, the researchers recommend the use of a disinfectant spray (Lysol) and 70% alcohol (ethanol), which are very effective regardless of the material of the bracelet. These solutions would guarantee the elimination of 99.99% of these bacteria in just 30 seconds. Alcohol wipes and apple cider vinegar are also effective, but for a longer exposure time.

The results of this study have been published in the journal Advances in Infectious Diseases.
