Lineker is a popular presenter of ‘Match of the day’, a Premier League highlights programme, but is not allowed to host the program until the BBC and Lineker reach an agreement over his use of social media.
The BBC considers his allegations against the government to be a breach of the broadcaster’s guidelines.
The former national team captain, who won the shooting league in the World Cup in 1986 and scored 48 goals in 80 international matches, has not commented on the decision.
Former Arsenal and international star Ian Wright, who also appears on the show, said on Twitter that he would not be on this weekend’s broadcast in “solidarity” with Lineker.
Lineker, 62 – who has 8.7 million followers on Twitter – is the BBC’s highest-paid star. The government has called his opinion on Twitter inappropriate and unacceptable and some politicians have called on the BBC to punish him.
