Barbie is invincible and with Oppenheimer sets a cinema record

There’s a new Barbie success story every week. Greta Gerwig’s cinema hit is now officially the world’s most successful cinema film of 2023. With the second and third place successes of the year, a another remarkable record set up.

Barbie, Oppenheimer and Super Mario Bros. break a record that has only been seen once in the last 20 years

Barbie now has Mojo worldwide, according to Box Office $1.381 billion recorded in the cinema. This puts the satirical comedy just above the Super Mario Bros. film, which has a global box office of $1.359 billion. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer came in third with a worldwide box office takings of over 852 million dollars.

It is now only the second time since 2001 that three titles make up the most successful films of the year, that are not sequels. In the last 20 years, this milestone has only happened in 2020, when Demon Slayer – The Movie: Mugen Train, The 800 and My People, My Homeland were the top three titles worldwide without at least one being a sequel. And this box office result was clearly shaped by the effects of the corona pandemic.

What about Barbie 2?

Despite the massive Barbie success, a sequel was made not officially announced yet. Neither director Greta Gerwig nor stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling have signed contracts. Due to the current Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strike, it may take even longer before important decisions about Barbie 2 are made.
