Canada’s state health agency announced yesterday that it has lifted the 3-month ‘postponement’ for blood donation, which is currently in effect, for sexually active gay men.

In the statement, it was stated that with the authorization given to the Canadian Blood Services, sexually active gay men removed the 3-month postponement application for blood donation, which is currently in effect, and that the decision will come into effect as of September 30, 2022.

In Canada, blood donation to sexually active gay men was previously prohibited for life, this period was reduced to 5 years in 2013, to one year in 2016 and to 3 months in 2019. In the 1980s, the testing of donated blood in Canada failed, there was a scandal due to contaminated blood products, and thousands of people were exposed to the HIV virus and hepatitis virus.
