Bail process delayed for Chatham man charged with attempted murder

Defense still awaiting relevant disclosure in teens manslaughter case

A man accused of attempted murder in a downtown Chatham shooting in April saw his bail process delayed Thursday.

Jared John Atwell, 25, of Chatham, who’s charged with attempted murder while using a firearm, possessing cocaine, and possession for the purpose of trafficking, made a brief virtual appearance Thursday in a Chatham court.

Defense lawyer Frank Retar said the matter originally was set for a bail hearing, but said he needed more time to prepare after receiving further materials from the Crown.

“I understand the court’s ready. And I understand the reason for the adjournment is a defense request,” he said.

The matter was added to July 5 by video. A publication ban is in place on evidence heard during the pre-trial phase.

According to reports published previously, a man was shot April 30 in a clash near King Street and Fifth Street about 1 am, Chatham-Kent police said. The injured man was treated in hospital.

Kyle Wright-Morgan, 32, was shot, court documents said.

It was an isolated incident involving two men known to each other, police said at the time.
