Axtion Sports Jam promotes mental fitness

Skateboard, BMX, and scooter riders of all ages are invited to take part in the Axtion Sports Jam on Sept. 17 in Caledonia.

The family-friendly event will showcase the skills and abilities of participants in both competitive and expressive categories with divisions 7 and under, 8-11, 12-15, 16 and older and adaptive in action sport categories.

Sponsored by HN REACH, Haldimand County and Dixon Cycle, the focus of the day is to promote mental fitness.

“Throughout the pandemic, HN REACH’s child and youth mental health counseling programs saw a 54 per cent increase in referrals,” said Scot Cooper, manager of child and youth mental health services. “Mental fitness is like a muscle and the more you work it, the stronger it gets. When it’s in good shape, mental fitness helps us think and act in positive way that benefit our families, friends, and community.”

Motivational speaker and hip hop artist Saidat will MC with tunes spun by DJ Missy KZ.

Axtion Sports Jam will be held from 9 am to 4 pm at the Aaron and Devin Kootcher Action Sports Park, 100 Haddington St.

Spectators are welcome. A special viewing area will be provided for seniors.

Participants can register for free at Dixon Cycle, 2-271 Argyle St. S., Caledonia.

Helmets are mandatory.

And anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver.
