Awesome inventory feature in Starfield shows which of us never really grew up

Starfield is a genuine Bethesda game. You don’t even have to leave the first planet to realize that.

The beginning of Starfield is quiet, the first explanations about the game run at walking speed. The pace stays the same for a while – just don’t stress for the beginners, they quickly collapse in space.

But the stress doesn’t bother me. It’s the things that are lying around everywhere.

Even before I left Introductory Planet, I already knew where my money/weight line was. Because I walked through the first bright rooms for a good 30 minutes, in which eager SciFi lights pointed out complicated functions and every soap dispenser fits into my inventory.

Of course I took the soap dispenser with me: 0.1 weight at 35 value. I have room for that.

If the value exceeds 100 times the weight, I pocket an item. I need such a rule, my inventories in Elder Scrolls and Fallout taught me that. But not every player can resist an abandoned plunger, some people just take it all.

Thankfully, Starfield allows us to live on our ship like kids who have never been taught the value of a tidy room.

Which feature is it? You can transform your ship into a garbage truck – at least from the inside. If you discard items, the new “decoration” remains in the ship and creates a cozy, homely feeling.

At least former long-term students like me should be reminded of their old dorm room. Reddit user “swampyswede” has not even left the first planet and has already refined his ship with “valuable” souvenirs:

What do players say about this? The atmosphere in the thread is excellent. Many star travelers who are young at heart can understand the mania for collecting and it turns out that some players are already working on a monopoly on certain items.

swampyswede is a big fan of succulents: “Succulent farmer should be a side quest, I would be on the leaderboard.” User aftershock911_2k5 has other preferences: “Foam cup collectors here. I think I’ve sold over 50 already.”

I also like to take the cups with me: the weight is 0.01.

Other users collect books, some of them can’t leave any tape because of their fallout past. One user reports that he only wanted to bring some decorations for his ship, but he overdid it and chaos quickly broke out. Mugs are also popular:

In any case, many players are celebrating Bethesda’s old habit of not only cluttering up their inventory, but also their surroundings permanently. Who wants to grow up?

Thankfully, thousands of hours of Bethesda and survival games keep me from stuffing my ship to the brim with worthless stuff. But I also take decorations here and there and at some point even the storage space on the ship is exhausted.

I think it’s only a matter of time before I have a ship in my fleet that requires you to periodically pull a pointed Lego brick out of the sole of your foot.
