Avatar 2: The Way of Water was a tremendous success for James Cameron and Disney. Can Avatar 3 match the records? The film was produced in parallel with part 2, shooting has been completed. But there’s still a lot to do before it’s released in cinemas. In this article, we reveal when Avatar 3 hits theaters, what happens in the movie, and how long it could be.

The Start: When is Avatar 3 supposed to come out?

Avatar 3 will officially be released in German cinemas on December 20, 2024. This is a Friday. In Germany, the blockbuster should even start a day earlier because films here always start on Thursdays. Like its two predecessors, Avatar 3 will take a run-up over the Christmas holidays.

In Avatar 2, Jake Sully and Neytiri’s family is stranded with the Metkayina water people. They fled from the human organization RDA (Resources Development Administration), which wants to exploit the moon Pandora. Especially the blue Na’vi version of Colonel Quaritch is after Jake. A bloody fight ensues, resulting in fatalities: Jake and Neytiri lost their son Neteyam (Jamie Flatters).

    Avatar 1 has a running time of 2 hours and 42 minutes. Avatar 2 is 3 hours and 10 minutes long. If the trend is confirmed, bumps Avatar 3 to the 4 hour mark. Will it come to that? Well, rumor has it that James Cameron is working on one 9 hour cut of Avatar 3which will appear as a mini-series on Disney + – after the theatrical release.

    What does that mean for the running time of the theatrical version? Cameron, so it is said, wants to fully equip the 9 hour version with expensive CGI. The more of it that can be seen in the theatrical version, the more it would be worth the effort. Let’s put it this way: If any filmmaker is bringing a 4-hour blockbuster to theaters these days, it’s James Cameron.
